How is Epilepsy Diagnosed?

To diagnose epilepsy, a doctor will review the patients symptoms and medical history. The doctor may order several tests to diagnose epilepsy and determine the cause of seizures. Although, having two unexplained seizures most likely means that you have epilepsy and that the seizures will continue. Below are a few ways that epilepsy is diagnosed.

  • Neurological exam: The doctor may test the patient's behavior, motor abilities, mental function and other areas to diagnose the condition and determine the type of epilepsy you may have

  • Blood tests: The doctor may take a blood sample to test for signs of infections, genetic conditions or other abnormalities that can be associated with seizures

  • Electroencephalogram (EEG): This is the most common test used to diagnose epilepsy. The doctor attached electrodes to the scalp with a paste like substance and the electrodes record the electrical activity of your brain

    • It's common to have abnormalities in brain pattern even when the patient is not having a seizure
